Urban Initiatives promotes cross-cultural understanding

WHO: Over 90 Urban Initiatives Work to Play program participants from Newton Bateman Elementary, J.W. Von Goethe Elementary and Morton School of Excellence representing the Irving Park, Logan Square and Garfield Park communities.

WHAT: The Urban Initiatives Multicultural Cup brings kids and families from diverse cultures together for a day of soccer, some healthy food and the chance to make new friends. Over 90 boys and girls from all comers of Chicago will gather at Haas Park in the Logan Square community on Saturday, September 26th.

Small sided soccer games will take place along with a variety of multicultural stations highlighting art, language, dance and food from around the world. Urban Initiatives coaches and supporters representing India, Mexico, and Great Britain will share their own cultural customs and knowledge with kids and families in attendance. This event gives kids and families an opportunity to practice understanding and accepting of others.

Crossing Borders Music Collective presents Around the World in Music: a Young People's Concert. This interactive string quartet program features diverse music from Uganda, Haiti, Iran, the Czech Republic, and the United States. Young people will explore the question "What is culture?" and, through guided listening, will hear how different cultural elements shape the music they hear.

Haas Park Open Soccer Tournaments July 13-14

 The Haas Park Advisory Council has formed a partnership with We Got Game to create the Haas FC.  This organization will join with CPD and City Soccer to promote soccer in our community.  We hope to host 3-4 tournaments each year with some focused on team play registration and others focused on open community enrollment.

 This is a tournament for the Haas Park Community. We will divide players into teams to compete in an open style tournament. Mandatory substitutions every 6 minutes ensure all players get in the action. Games will be played on the big field!
